A proud GNU user

I burned the Debian GNU/hurd k8 CDs and installed it in our main CC today. It took alomost 3 weeks for me to to download all the 4 CD Images. First mirror I got from filesearching.com with keyword hurd-k as per the debian site. But the download stopped half way so I googled and found out new and faster mirror [The old one was 10-500 *B/s* ].

Note: If anyone want a copy mail me.

I read the installtion manuals again and again but that was not required since the cds were bootable with linux kernel and the installtion was smooth.

The first challenge was the confusing partition names. I managed to select the right partition name [hd0s7 in my case] and the native-install completed without any problem. Then I tried to setup the network. It didn’t work

As the manual says I tried

hurd:/dev# settrans -fgap /servers/socket/2 /hurd/pfinet -i eth0 -a 192.168.2.163 -g 192.168.2.100 -m 255.255.255.0

The system returned an error

/hurd/pfinet: eth0: (os/device) no such device
settrans: /hurd/pfinet: Translator died

So I tried adding that device

hurd:/dev# cds /dev
hurd:/dev# ./MAKEDEV eth0

But the system responded with

./MAKEDEV: eth0: Unknown device name

I’m waiting for replies from hurd forums and mailing lists.

Anyway now I can proudly say I am a GNU user.
The installtion was easier than I expected. Now one the official release is ready I hope more people will use GNU OS and the gnu project and fsf will have more recognition.

Update[1]: Got another guy with the same problem
and this is the thread of my problem Watch this place for latest info.
Here is the contents of /dev/klog
