FOSS Day at BMSCE

One weeks back (24th September) I talked at BMS College of Enginering of Free and Open Source Software. Dilip and Thejesh Already wrote about it (I was kinda lazy to write).

Now we are trying to improve ourselves so that we can have a better impact on the audience. It was our alpha edition and so it had many bugs, we didn’t have any idea what to expect. But I think this experience gave us a better picture and will help us (hopefully) in our next ventures.

All this started with Thejesh’s mail in fsf-friends mailing list enquiring about any plans for Software Freedom Day. We discussed many possible events in August blugmeet. But nothing materialised since we were very late and many colleges had exmas. We got positive reply from Nirmal Thacker of BMS College and it took us till the week before the seminar to confirm the date. Kudos to Nirmal and team to make it a grand success.

We met of Thurday before talk to plan the event and the Alumnii of BMS told us not to expect more than 60 and the turn up was above our expectations. We plan to continue our efforts in other campuses also (we are planning events in MSRIT and PESIT). We are preaparing a FAQ to answer those ‘Frequesntly Asked Questions’ like ‘How do I make money from FOSS ?’ ‘Why do we need to struggle with galde when we can use Visual Studio easily ?’ … If you have some question about FOSS, then update the FAQ and if you got answer to some of these questions then do post it too. Let’s better prepared next time.

Update: The slides are available here pdf

Radio City Rocks ! Occasionally I listen to Gyanvani from IGNOU, sometimes good programs are there like history of English laguage or study of characteristics of male which attracts female of a species :-) ….

Did you check the Nokia 770 site ? Well, BTM people are busy and we are trying to talk to managements to send their players :-)

Hey you are most welcome to join us. Indeed we want more students to join (Any more folks looking for this Tejas ?) Next sessions are planned in MSRIT and PESIT. I think is PESIT is having sessional exmas and we’ll think of it after that. We need to plan some more.FOSS FAQ is direct result of BMS Seminar. We need to better prepare to answer these questions. This week I’m going home. I think we can meet after init7. Try to get any more interested folks from BMS (even we can meet there itself). Last blug meet we had two studets from PESIT attending (Tejas -1st year and Anush – 3rd year). If we can make a network of FOSS guys in all colleges in Bangalore it would nice.
